Jaclyn and the Island

by Jaclyn on June 17, 2013

Anyone who knows me, knows that movement is an essential part of who I am. If I’m not exploring, changing, growing, evolving, or traveling… I’m dying!

Years ago, an impatient Moroccan taxi driver dropped me at the edge of the Sahara desert with no civilization in site. It was 138 degrees outside. It crossed my mind that I might die. After standing with my bag under the sun for half an hour, I noticed a cloud of dust arising from the sandy dunes on the horizon. This wasn’t just any cloud of dust; this cloud emitted a hum. And as the humming dust-cloud neared closer, I was able to make out a speck of pale blue atop a buzzing moped.

It was a Tuareg nomad, wearing dark sunglasses and a hesitant smile. He motioned for me to climb on the moped. What other option did I have? The last food I’d eaten was a watermelon at 2 a.m., just before I went back to sleep in the shower of my hotel room–cold water splashing against my skin. The air conditioning was out.

Mohammed

Clinging to the nomad as we rode towards Algeria, I felt him chuckling silently in my arms. Perhaps the situation was as ridiculous and perfect for him as it was for me.

He reached inside his pale blue garb (as if it was a magician’s bag!) and suddenly produced a protective scarf for my burning head. His name was Mohammed, of course.

My savior and friend.

Desert Camp

life coach las vegasThe story goes on, but I’ll stop here because I must arrive at the purpose of this e-mail:

I’ve been wanting to travel again, but to a different sort of place. Not old-world Europe, or earthy South America, or back to Northwest Africa where I had re-energized my faith before. I’ve been feeling the need for an island–as deserted as I could find. Somewhere that would allow me to feel the terrifying alone-ness of being alive on this planet. I think there are incredible things to learn in that space.

There is a phrase in the Duino Elegies that says it best, “[I feel] the need to find an external landscape that corresponds to the size and terror and hushed stillness of my own inner life…”

I chose the Seychelles Islands because they were as Eden-esque as I could find. There is even a portion of land on one of these islands called ‘Lemuria’. The perfect place to finish my book–another reason this trip is necessary. I want to lay alone on a sparkling beach and feel small in this cosmic place. Then I want to write about it. This is what moves me.
